About Us
Merlins Craft was founded by myself, Max Merlin Jenkins. I'm a Mid Wales based wood crafter who likes to dabble in joinery, bespoke carpentry, furniture making, small structure building and also green woodwork and sustainable woodland management.
I grew up in the beautiful Dyfi valley in Mid Wales, surrounded by the wonder of nature. From a very young age I have always been compelled to build and create using organic materials provided by the natural environment. I like to take great influence from the surrounding landscapes, rolling hills, curling waves, reaching branches, winding rivers and many other pleasing, organic shapes that nature has to offer.
I began my training in a joinery workshop in Brighton. After gaining the basic skills I needed to get started, I moved back to Wales and began working alongside and being trained by various local craftspeople and artists; these people helped me gain more knowledge about the trade, learn new creative techniques and feel confident enough to begin my career.
Whilst working for myself as a bespoke carpenter, I spent a year completing an NVQ level 3 course in green woodworking and sustainable woodland management.
I try to mainly use environmentally friendly, sustainably sourced materials through : foraging in my local welsh oak woodlands for dead or fallen trees and branches; recycling and reclaiming materials such as wood, glass, metal and stone. Collecting wood for coppice products and structural timber through sustainable woodland management and selective thinning.
I try to make sure that any wood I do purchase has been FSC certified.
I like to make bespoke furniture and structures in a fairy tale, rustic style; often preserving the natural, organic forms of the wood as it is found. i.e roots, driftwood, heart-wood branches and trees. Due to this, each piece I produce is completely unique. I can however produce a replica as close to the original as possible for my customers.
